Stumps on Day 4

Chris Martin picked up his 9th five-wicket haul as India slipped to a terrible 82 for 6 in 40 overs by the close of play on the fourth day. The hosts are hanging in there with a very low lead of 110 runs. VVS Laxman is their biggest hope of bailing them out of jail as he is batting well on an unbeaten 34 from 99 balls with 3 fours. Harbhajan Singh who just joined him a few minutes before Stumps struck a couple of vital blows - a six over long on and a boundary to fine leg to put up something on the board for India.

Three wickets went down for India in the final session starting with Sachin Tendulkar who got bowled off the inside edge trying to drive Chris Martin on the up. Next to go was Suresh Raina who pushed hard at a Chris Martin outswinger towards mid on to get a thick edge which was brilliantly caught by Taylor in the slips and India collapsed to 15 for 5 in the 11th over.

India Skipper MS Dhoni (22 from 72 balls) applied himself to add a crucial 50-run partnership with VVS Laxman but got bowled off the inside edge after failing to handle a rising delivery from Chris Martin who finished the day with superb figures of 13-7-25-5.

Tea on Day 4

India have been shaken up at 2 for 3 by Tea in their second innings as the Kiwis turned the tables on the hosts in the first Test at Ahmedabad. The hosts are now into a lead of 30 runs having bowled out New Zealand for 459.

There was an early wicket for India after lunch with Daniel Vettori (41 from 95 balls with a four and a six) under edging a cut shot off Suresh Raina to the wicket keeper. After a brief partnership with Jeetan Patel, Gareth Hopkins (14) got out to Pragyan Ojha after being hit on the pad infront of off by one that straightened. Sreesanth and Zaheer Khan wrapped up the innings as the Kiwis finally got bowled out in as many as 165.4 overs.

Chris Martin provided the twist to the tale when he had Gautam Gambhir caught behind for a duck in the third ball of India's second innings. By the end of the 2nd over, Virender Sehwag (1) was run out after a terrible mix up with Dravid which was caused by a brilliant diving stop from substitute fielder Guptill. At the stroke of Tea, Dravid (1) was gone poking a Chris Martin delivery just outside off to get caught behind and leave India in dire straits at 2 for 3 in 4.5 overs.

Lunch on Day 4

New Zealand had yet another good batting session as the first Test at Ahmedabad is heading towards a possible draw with the first innings yet to be completed although it is already the fourth day in progress. The Kiwis have progressed to 417 for 6 by lunch losing just the one wicket of debutant Kane Williamson in the last ball before lunch. Williamson was dismissed after registering a century on Test Debut. He scored 131 from 299 balls with 10 fours before edging his drive off a turning ball from Pragyan Ojha to Laxman at slip.

Williamson got good support from his Skipper Daniel Vettori who remained unbeaten on 41 from 89 balls with a boundary and a six. The deficit for the Kiwis is now down to 70 runs.
