Delhi Capitals won the toss and opted to bowl first. They began on an impressive note, claiming three wickets for 45 runs inside the powerplay. Ishant Sharma dismissed Shikhar Dhawan (7) and Liam Livingstone (4) cheaply. Axar Patel then got rid of the dangerous Jitesh Sharma, knocking him over for 5.
DC kept picking up wickets from one end, but could not dislodge Prabhsimran until the penultimate over, which proved decisive in the end analysis. The aggressive opener smashed 10 fours and six sixes in his brilliant hundred before being dismissed by Mukesh Kumar. Sam Curran’s 20 off 24 was the only other decent contribution in the innings, which ended on 167/7. For Delhi, Ishant finished with 2/27 from his three overs.
DC got off to a rollicking start in the chase, racing away to 69 inside seven overs. However, once the opening partnership was broken, PBKS exercised their dominance in the match. Philip Salt (21 off 17) was the first to go, cleaned up by Harpreet. The latter went on to dismiss Rilee Rossouw (5), before ending DC captain David Warner’s blitz of 54 in 27 balls, trapping him lbw. The left-arm spinner also added the scalp of Manish Pandey (0) as Delhi completely lost their way.
Leg-spinner Rahul Chahar (2/16) also came up with a significant contribution, trapping Mitchell Marsh (3) and Axar (1) leg before. Nathan Ellis (2/26) chipped in with the scalps of Aman Hakim Khan (16) and Praveen Dubey (16) as Delhi were held to 136/8.
Speaking after being named Player of the Match, Prabhsimran said, “We lost a few wickets at the top, so the plan was to take the game a little deep. I have been with the team for a long time and when you get back-to-back opportunities you’ve got to grab it.”
He added, “The wicket was slightly tough at the start and the plan was to build some partnership and then target a few bowlers. I also speak to senior players who keep telling me to make sure that I take the game deep and make it big when I get a start. Really thankful to the management for the opportunities.”
