Samir Patel, released for county duty by the England management after he had been left out of the first three one-day internationals against Sri Lanka, led Nottinghamshire’sfightback in the field after a spectacular batting collapse.

Patel bowled his four overs economically and had Jack Manuel stumped to break a threatening opening partnership. Patel’s throw from midwicket also helped to halt Moeen Ali in full flow though it looked a close call on the television replays.

Nottinghamshire’s resilience in the field, after they had surrendered their last eight wickets for 50 in 46 balls, guaranteed them a home quarter-final but Worcestershire now have little chance of reaching the knockout stages for only the third time.

An opening stand of 69 between TamimIqbal, who lodged a ball in the roof tiles of the New Road Stand with a huge six off Moeen, and Alex Hales helped limit the damage of Nottinghamshire’s subsequent collapse against Worcestershire’s trio of spinners on a slow pitch.
