Live News and Ball by Ball Score Update of India Vs Sri Lanka, ODI 5 at Adelaide Oval, Commonwealth Bank Tri Series 2012

Sri Lanka have left India with a modest target of 237 to win the fifth match of the CB Series at the Adelaide Oval. Thanks to Dinesh Chandimal’s fighting 81, Sri Lanka could atleast out up something on the board for its spinners to play with on what looks to be a turning pitch.

It was in the second ball of the match that Sri Lanka lost its first wicket when Upul Tharanga was forced to edge an away swinger from Vinay Kumar for a duck. Tillakaratne Dilshan hooked a six over backward squareleg but lasted only 23 balls for his 16 before under edging a cut shot off Irfan Pathan to the Wicket Keeper. Sri Lanka remained pegged back at 28 for 2 in 7.1 overs when Kumar Sangakkara was joined by Dinesh Chandimal.

Dinesh Chandimal was the top scorer with 81The Lankans got a 51-run stand before Kumar Sangakkara (31 from 56 balls with 2 fours) under pressure came down the track for a hoick against the turning ball from Ashwin and got caught at point in the 20th over. Sri Lanka then got the much needed big partnership from Chandimal and Skipper Mahela Jayawardene to get back in the match. After the pair had consolidated to 173 for 3, Mahela Jayawardene fell lbw to Vinay Kumar after the second drinks break when he played right across the line to an inswinger which stayed low in the 37th over. Jayawardene scored 43 from 49 balls in partnership of 94 with Chandimal.

In the very next over, Dinesh Chandimal batting on a fluent 81 (from 91 balls with 6 fours and a six) got run out when he was called for a difficult single towards covers by Mathews. The combination of Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni got Chandimal run out with his bat just getting on the line. In the 40th over, Sri Lanka got into further mess at 184 for 6 with Thisara Perera (5) miscuing a lofted shot off Ashwin to mid off. In the end, a tiny cameo of 22* from 14 balls (with 3 fours) from Sachithra Senanayake helped Sri Lanka to post 236 for 9.

For the Indians, Vinay Kumar was the pick of the bowlers with 10-1-46-3. Irfan Pathan had a good comeback with 1 for 38 in 9 overs. Ashwin got the ball to turn and he did well for his 2 for 30 in 10 overs. Umesh Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja disappointed though by not troubling the batsmen enough and were also costly.

Toss and Pitch Report: Sri Lanka have won the toss and elected to bat first in the Fifth match of the CB Series against India at the Adelaide Oval. This match is going to be played on the same pitch that was used day before yesterday, so it’s likely to slow down and assist the spinners. Shot making may not be that easy with the ball expected to stop slightly onto the bat.

Team News: The big news is that Irfan Pathan will be making his comeback today. He gets his chance with Zaheer Khan pulling out with a right calf muscle strain. Virender Sehwag has a back spasm according to MS Dhoni and he will be replaced with none other than the legend Sachin Tendulkar.

Sri Lanka have made a couple of changes as well. Dhammika Prasad is having a minor injury and Lahiru Thirmanne is feeling sick according to Mahela Jayawardene. The Lankans have brought in all-rounder Thissara Perera and left-arm-spinner Rangana Herath in their place.
