The Graeme Smith led South Africa have a great opportunity of going past England to claim the No.1 Ranking in Test Cricket if they manage to whitewash the Kiwis 3-0

South Africa has a great opportunity of becoming the World No.1 Test Team if it can beat hosts New Zealand in the 3-Test Series starting on the 7th of this month. However, South Africa would need nothing less than a 3-0 whitewash to overcome England by just the one rating point to claim the no.1 Ranking. Even now, South Africa are just a point below England who are having 118 rating points. If the Proteas can achieve a 3-0 cleansweep over the Kiwis then it will be the first time since the introduction of the ICC Rankings that South Africa will become the World No.1 Team in Tests.

So far the New Zealand tour has gone well for the Proteas as they defeated the hosts 3-0 in the ODI Series and won the T20I Series 2-1. The ICC is set to reward the World No.1 Test Team with a cash prize of around 88 lakhs Rupees. For the record, India is sitting at no.3 in the Test rankings despite two 0-4 whitewashes in England and Australia.
