Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) got the better of Mumbai Indians (MI) by five runs in match number 63 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Tuesday, May 16. With the win, LSG moved up to the third position in the IPL 2023 points table, strengthening their push for a playoffs spot. MI, on the other hand, fell to fourth position.

Mumbai Indians won the toss and opted to bowl first in the game. However, Lucknow Super Giants did well to post a competitive 177/3 on the board. Deepak Hooda, opening in place of Kyle Mayers, fell cheaply again, for 5 to Behrendorff. Prerak Mankad (0) then nicked the next ball to the keeper.

When Quinton de Kock (16 off 15) edged a googly from Piyush Chawla to the keeper, LSG were in trouble at 35/3. However, Marcus Stoinis (89* off 47) and skipper Krunal Pandya (49 off 42 - retired hurt) featured in a fine rescue act for Lucknow. While Krunal hit one four and a six in his defiant knock, Stoinis struck four fours and eight sixes.

Stoinis launched into Chris Jordan in the 18th over of the innings, slamming him for two sixes and three fours. Consecutive sixes followed in the next over bowled by

Behrendorff as LSG got the final flourish.

Chasing 178, MI got off to an excellent start as Ishan Kishan (59 off 39) and Rohit Sharma (37 off 25) added 90 for the first wicket in 9.4 overs. However, leggie Ravi Bishnoi (2/26) led LSG’s fightback, dismissing both openers.

Impact Player Yash Thakur (2/40) knocked over Suryakumar Yadav for 7 and also dismissed Vishnu Vinod for 2. Tim David (32 not out off 19) brought Mumbai back in the contest, striking three sixes. However, with MI needing 11 runs of the last over, Mohsin Khan bowled brilliantly to concede only five.

Speaking after being named Player of the Match, Stoinis hailed Mohsin and said, “[It was a] great moment. He hasn't played here from a long time, a big moment for Mohsin, especially bowling the final over after being injured.”

On the close win, he added, “It was very close; there are a lot of things not going your way. A couple of good overs from the spinners and Mohsin sealed it for us. We have shown that we are a real team, there no real superstars, there are different people stepping up and performing for us.”
