Stuart Broad skittled Australia for 60 in the morning session and then Joe Root piled on the runs in the afternoon and evening sessions to give England 214-runs lead at the close of day 1 of the fourth Test at Trent Bridge.

Stuart Broad picked up 8 wickets for 15 runs to help England bowl out Australia for mere 60 runs in their first inning. England won the toss and opted to bowl first on greenish wicket that has a lot to offer for the fast bowlers early in the inning. English bowlers made full use of the conditions of Trent Bridge and starting taking wickets right from the first over of the inning. Chris Rogers and Steve Smith both were dismissed in the first over of the inning off Broad. Rogers was caught at first slip by Cook off Broad on third ball of the inning for duck. Then Steve Smith was caught by Root on last ball of the same over for six. David Warner too followed them when he was caught behind without scoring in second over of the inning off Mark Wood. Shaun Marsh got the game today in place of Mitchell Marsh but he was not able to make any mark what so ever. Marsh was dismissed for zero when Bell caught him in slip cordon off Broad. Ben Stokes caught Adam Voges in the fifth over of the inning to reduce Australia 21 for 5. Cook took Clarke off Broad and scoreboard shown 28 for six wickets down. Peter Nevill was the last recognized batsman for the visitors and he was bowled by last Test match hero, Steven Finn and Australia were seven down for 33. Visitors somehow managed to get past 50 in spite of losing nine wickets for 47 runs.

Michael Clarke would be very annoyed man with the performance of his batsmen and his own form too is a matter of concern now. After getting dismissed for 136 in first inning of Edgbaston Test, Australia were hoping for some solid batting performance this time around but this performance was no way near their thought of ideal. Australia didn’t even manage to hang around for 20 overs and they were bowled out in the 19th over of the first inning of the Test match.

Alastair Cook and Adam Lyth came to open the inning for England and they survived few moments before the lunch. Lyth’s poor run with bat continued in this inning too when he was caught by Nevill behind the stumps off Starc for 14. Ian Bell was also not able to make any significant contribution as he was trapped in front of stumps off Starc for 1 and England were two down for 34. This brought England’s most reliable batsman, Joe Root on crease. Root was perfect in technique to counter the swinging deliveries and he had ample patience to respect the good deliveries and cash on the lose one. Root played the cover drive on anything too full and cut the short balls too. He added 173-runs partnership with Jonny Bairstow for the fourth wicket. Root scored his second century of this Ashes and Bairstow also made well deserved half-century. Bairstow (74) was caught by Rogers at square leg off Hazalewood just before the stumps. Root is still on crease on 124* and night watchman Mark Wood on 2*.

Australia will have to put some magical performance to do something extraordinary now to comeback into this match now from this stage.
