Phil Jaques retires from International and Australian Domestic Cricket

Phil Jaques, who has played for Australia in 11 Test Matches between 2005 and 2008 has announced his retirement from Australian Cricket. The left-handed opening batsman who is just 32 years of age will retire from International and First Class Cricket for Australia at the end of this season.

Phil Jaques, the New South Wales player will however continue his first class career for Yorkshire in the English County. Jaques being born to English parents is a holder of a British passport. Interestingly he was eligible to play for both England and Australia though he chose to prefer the latter for international cricket.

The 32-year-old Jaques has an impressive average of 47.47 in the 11 Tests that he has played for Australia which includes 3 100s and 6 50s. The left-hander has also played 6 ODIs with limited success. Phil Jaques had a dream start to his ODI career when he scored 94 on debut against South Africa at the Docklands Stadium in Melbourne to help Australia to a victory.

Phil Jaques is a veteran in first-class cricket with as many as 38 100s and 63 50s to his name. It was in 2005 that Phil Jaques could break into the Australian Test side having previously competed with the likes of Matthew Hayden, Justin Langer and Simon Katich for the opening slots. It was a recurring back problem that has cut short Phil Jaques’ international career to just the 11 Tests and 6 ODIs.
