With India having struggled on the opening day of the second Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, here is some inspiration for them as we look at five of their famous wins at the venue.
India vs England, 1962: This was India's maiden win at the venue. The victory tasted extra special as India had to wait for 27 years for the same. The win came against England, the country that invented the game, in 1962. India won by 187 runs. Salim Durani was the star of the show with eight wickets while Ramakant Desai and Chandu Borde finished with four each.
India vs West Indies, 1975: To beat the West Indies in the 70s in any format was big. India got the better of the Windies at Eden Gardens in 1975. The visitors were at their peak back then, with the likes of Sir Andy Roberts, Roy Fredericks and Lance Gibbs part of the squad. Yet, India were able to overcome them. Gundappa Viswanath paved the way for India's 85-run win with a memorable second-innings hundred. He also scored a half-century in the first innings. With the ball, Bishen Bedi claimed six scalps and Madan Lal five.
India v Australia, 1998: The 90s was an era in which India were unbeatable at home. And, the Eden Gardens win against the Aussies was one of the biggest demonstrations of their dominance. India were all over Mark Taylor's men, winning by an innings and 219 runs. Mohammad Azharuddin led from the front for India with a classic unbeaten 163. There were fantastic support acts from VVS Laxman (95), Navjot Sidhu (97), Rahul Dravid (86) and Sourav Ganguly (65) as India piled on 633 for 5. Anil Kumble then claimed 5 for 62 to bowl India to victory.
India vs Australia 2001: This is arguably India's greatest Test win ever. Having been bowled out cheaply in the first innings, India found themselves in a hole in the second innings as well, and a defeat seemed imminent. Dravid and Laxman then turned the game on their hands with a spectacular 376-run partnership as they batted through an entire day. Harbhajan Singh, who had taken a hat-trick in the first innings, spun India to a famous win on the final day.
India v Pakistan, 2005: India were denied a win at Mohali courtesy the famous marathon partnership between Abdul Razzaq and Kamran Akmal. But, at Kolkata, they brought out their best. Dravid got hundreds in both innings, with 110 and 135. Virender Sehwag made 81 in the first innings, Tendulkar 52 in both knocks and Dinesh Karthik scoring 93 in the second innings. Kumble picked up 7 for 63 in Pakistan's second innings, as India won the contest by 195 runs.
