South Africa were shockingly bowled out for just 168 by an unsung Sri Lankan bowling attack on the Second Day’s play in the 2ndSunfoil Test at Kingsmead in Durban. Two left-arm bowlers Chanaka Welegedara and Rangana Herath ran through the Proteas’ batting line-up taking nine out of the ten wickets to fall and help Sri Lanka take massive 170-run lead in the first innings.

The only worry for the Lankans at the end of Day 2 was that they lost their Skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan cheaply under fading light conditions in their second innings. The visitors are in with an overall lead of 177 runs with 9 wickets in hand. At Stumps on Day 2, Sri Lanka were 7 for 1 in 2.1 overs with Dilshan forced to edge a nasty short ball from Steyn to first slip.

Having got this huge lead, this has to be Sri Lanka’s biggest opportunity to taste what could be their maiden Test victory on South African soil having previously lost 7 out of the 9 matches they have played till date. The second day started with SL at 289 for 7. Overnight batsman Thilan Samaraweera who resumed on 86 scored his 13thTest century, finishing with 102 (from 269 balls with 11 fours). Rangana Herath contributed a valuable 30 as Sri Lanka ended their first innings with a decent total of 338. Debutant Marchant de Lange rounded off with dream figures of 7 for 81 in 23.2 overs!

Some persistent seam bowling from left armer Chanaka Welegedara and the guile of left arm spinner Rangana Herath turned the match on its head for the visitors as South Africa were collapsing in a heap at the Sahara Stadium in Kingsmead! Only one down Hashim Amla batted for some time at the crease scoring 54 from 83 balls with 10 fours before he got caught behind off an inside edge on the backfoot to a Welegedara delivery.

The Proteas were bundled out for 168 in 54.4 overs with Chanaka Welegedara taking 5 for 52 and Rangana Herath claiming a neat 4 for 49 in 20 overs besides bowling seven maidens!
