Pakistan made it into the Quarter Finals after defeating Zimbabwe by 7 wickets in a rain-curtailed Group A contest at Kandy thus making their entry into the Quarter Finals. Zimbabwe batting first after winning the toss were rocked by the Pakistani new ball attack which reduced them to 43 for 4. Craig Ervine with 52 (from 82 balls) and Skipper Elton Chigumbura with 32* (from 46 balls) ensured that there was a decent contest by stretching Zimbabwe to 151 for 7 in 39.4 overs before a second rain break put an abrupt end to their innings. Umar Gul was once again the star with the ball taking 3 for 36.

Pakistan was given a revised target of 162 from 38 overs which they could achieve by consuming 34.1 overs and losing three wickets. One down batsman Asad Shafiq who was playing his first ever World Cup match remained unbeaten on a neat 78 from 97 balls. Opener Mohammad Hafeez with his 49 sealed the contest alongside Asad Shafiq through a solid 82-run stand for the second wicket.
