Indian team for World Cup 2023 announced; Rahul in, no place for Chahal, Samson

The Indian cricket team for the 2023 ODI World Cup to be played in India from October 5 to November 19 has been announced. There were no surprises as such. The core of the team is as expected.

The 15-member squad will be led by Rohit Sharma and features Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer as some of their key batters. Shreyas has recently made a comeback from injury and is part of the Indian team for the ongoing Asia Cup.

KL Rahul, who missed the first two matches of India's Asia Cup 2023 campaign due to a fresh niggle he picked up while recuperating from a thigh injury, is also part of India’s 15-member World Cup squad.

Keeper-batter Ishan Kishan retains his place after smashing half-centuries in four consecutive innings Suryakumar Kumar hasn't done a lot to inspire confidence in the one-day format. However, he has also been retained on the basis of his T20 exploits and his potential match-winning ability.

Among all-rounders, Indian have gone with Hardik Pandya and Shardul Thakur as the pace bowling all-rounders and Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja as the spin bowling all-rounders.

In the bowling department, the pace attack with led by Jasprit Bumrah, while Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj also feature on the list. Kuldeep Yadav has been retained as the lead spinner ahead of Yuzvendra Chahal.

Apart from Chahal, there is no place for Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma and pacer Prasidh Krishna.

India will begin their campaign with a match against Australia in Chennai on October 8.
