Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) beat Punjab Kings (PBKS) by eight wickets in match number 14 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Sunday, April 9. With the triumph, SRH registered their first win of the ongoing season.

Sunrisers Hyderabad won the toss and opted to bowl in the second match of the double-header. They came up with an excellent performance to restrict Punjab Kings to 143 for 9. Leg-spinner Mayank Markande was the star performer for SRH with the ball, claiming 4/15 from his four overs. He dismissed Sam Curran (22), Shahrukh Khan (4), Rahul Chahar (0) and Nathan Ellis (0). Pacers Umran Malik and Marco Jansen also played their part, claiming two scalps apiece.

For PBKS, skipper Shikhar Dhawan played a lone hand with the willow. He returned unbeaten on 99 off 66 balls, slamming 12 fours and five sixes. Apart from Dhawan, who hit a six off the last ball of the innings, Curran was the only other batter to reach double figures. Prabhsimran Singh was dismissed for a golden duck; Matthew Short made 1, while Jitesh Sharma scored 4. Sikandar Raza was brought in as the Impact Player, but managed only 5.

In the chase of 144, SRH lost Harry Brook to Arshdeep Singh for 13, while Mayank Agarwal was dismissed by Rahul Chahar for 21. However, Rahul Tripathi (74 not out off 48) and Aiden Markram (37 not out off 21) added 100 runs for the third wicket to pave the way for an easy win for SRH. Tripathi struck 10 fours and three sixes, while Markram hit six boundaries.

Speaking after the much-needed win, SRH captain Markram said, It was special. It was a bit rough for us at the start but we are happy to win today. I believe that our great fan base was a privilege tonight. To get a win in front of them was very pleasing. Identifying how we can get better was quite important. But it was still about believing in ourselves.

On Markande replacing Adil Rashid, Markram added, “It's not a nice move to make but I am super happy for Markande. He bowled really well tonight. He has a lot of heart about him.”

Praising Tripathi, the South African batter commented, “He is only a couple of balls away from something special and he showed his class tonight. It's easy with Rahul at the other end. Great franchise to be a part of and it's our first win of the season, it means a lot.”
