We are now in the fifth edition of the ICC World T20 and only five hundreds have been scored till date. England’s Alex Hales scored the fifth one in the match against Sri Lanka on Thursday, and the first of the current edition. He played a sensational knock, remaining unbeaten on 116 off merely 64 balls, an innings studded with 11 fours and as many as 6 sixes. In fact, he finished off the game with a six as well. It was thanks to Hales that England managed to overhaul Sri Lanka’s tough target of 190 in spite of losing Michael Lumb and Moeen Ali in the first over of the chase itself. It was without doubt one of the best knocks played in the championship. A look at the other four hundreds that have been scored in the ICC World T20 over the years.

Brendon McCullum (123): The smashingNew Zealand batsman was all over the Bangladesh bowlers in a group match of the 2012 edition at Pallekele. New Zealand batted first in the game and posted a massive 191 for 3. McCullum single-handedly scored 123 of those. Coming in to bat at number three, he blasted the runs from merely 58 deliveries during his 72-minute stay at the crease. The pulsating knock featured 11 fours and 7 sixes while his strike rate was above 200. The New Zealander was extremely severe on Shakib Al Hasan, who was clobbered for 40 runs in 4 fours and Elias Sunny, who conceded 36 in 3.

Chris Gayle (117): Undoubtedly the most famous World T20 hundred since it came in the opening match of the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2007, against formidable hosts South Africa at Johannesburg. In this day-night encounter, West Indies batted first and Gayle was in his elements right from the start. He hit the ball with amazing ease and made quality bowlers look like club bowlers. There were as many as 10 sixes in the left-hander’s incredible knock, a clear indication of how cleanly he struck the ball. Gayle’s smashing knock of 117 lasted 57 balls. Of all people, he was most severe on Shaun Pollock, who was thrashed for 52 runs in his 4 overs. It is another matter altogether that South Africa chased down the target with ease courtesy Herschelle Gibbs’ swashbuckling unbeaten 90 off 55 balls.

Suresh Raina (101): The Indian left-hander played a memorable knock against South Africa at St Lucia in the group encounter of the 2010 edition. India batted first and Raina, promoted to number three delivered a brilliant 101 off 60 balls. He hit 9 fours and 5 sixes during his innings. Rory Kleinveldt was taken for 48 runs in 4 overs as India won the clash by 14 runs.

Mahela Jayawardene (100): The former Sri Lankan skipper made exactly 100 in a group match against Zimbabwe at Guyana in the 2010 edition. Sri Lanka batted first, and Jayawardene eased his way to 100 from 64 balls with 10 fours and 4 sixes. Lanka finished with 173 and clinched the game with ease.
