Rajasthan Royals (RR) beat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 32 runs in match number 37 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Thursday, April 27. Batting first after winning the toss in what was their 200th IPL match, Rajasthan put up an impressive 202/5 on the board. Yashasvi Jaiswal top-scored with 77 off 43. Leg-spinner Adam Zampa then picked up 3/22 as Chennai were held to 170/6.

Jaiswal and Jos Buttler (27 off 21) added 86 for the first wicket in 8.2 overs. Jaiswal struck eight fours and four sixes, while Buttler hit four fours. Jaiswal reached his 50 in 26 balls, but the opening partnership was broken when Ravindra Jadeja had Buttler caught at long-on.

RR captain Sanju Samson (17) and Jaiswal then fell in the same over to Tushar Deshpande. Both were caught off slower balls as their timing went awry. Shimron Hetmyer (8) then dragged a carrom ball from Maheesh Theekshana into his stumps.

Dhruv Jurel (34 off 15) and Devdutt Padikkal (27 not out off 13) added 48 for the fifth wicket to ensure RR crossed the 200-run mark. While Jurel struck three fours and two sixes, Padikkal hit five fours.

Chasing 203, CSK lost Devon Conway for 8 off 16 as he miscued Zampa to mid-off. Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 47 off 29, hitting five fours and a six. He too fell to Zampa, following a failed attempt at a big hit. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin then dismissed Ajinkya Rahane (15) and Ambati Rayudu (0) in one over.

Shivam Dube (52 off 33), Moeen Ali (23 off 12) and Ravindra Jadeja (23 not out off 15) found some big hits towards the end, but it was too little, too late.

Speaking after the defeat, CSK skipper MS Dhoni commented that the target was quite a bit above par. He explained, “The reason was the first six overs, gave too many runs, but at the same time the pitch was best to bat on at that time. Even when they were finishing the edges kept going for boundaries. They got par+ score and we were not able to stop the runs.”

Praising Player of the Match Jaiswal, he added, “Yashasvi batted really well, important to go after the bowlers, took calculated risks. It was slightly easier against our bowlers because we had to assess the right lengths. Even then Yashasvi batted well at the top end and at the end Jurel batted really well.”

On his memories of Jaipur, he concluded, “I think my first ODI hundred in Vizag gave me some 10 games, but the 183 over here gave me the chance for one year, so this venue is close to my heart.”
