Kolkata Knight Riders caused a big upset beating tournament favourites Kings XI Punjab by 9 wickets in Match 34 at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.

A good bowling performance from KKR kept the explosive batting line-up to 149 for 8 on a good batting pitch. Leggie Piyush Chawla was the key bowler for KKR taking three wickets for just 19 runs in his 4 overs. Chawla’s prized wickets included Glenn Maxwell and a well set Virender Sehwag who was the top scorer of Kings XI Punjab with 72 from 50 balls (with 11 fours and a six).

Apart from Chawla, Morne Morkel bowled superbly taking 2 for 20 in 4 overs to put early pressure on the Kings XI Punjab.

In the second half, KKR got off to a dream start with Robin Uthappa sweetly timing his shots to score 46 from 28 balls with 8 fours and a six. Skipper Gautam Gambhir held one end up to take KKR home with his unbeaten knock of 63 from 45 balls with 7 fours. Manish Pandey supported him with an unbeaten 36 from 35 balls to help KKR win with a couple of overs to spare.
